A statistical study of the optical spectral variability in gamma-ray blazars

چکیده
ABSTRACT Blazars optical emission is generally dominated by relativistic jets, although the host galaxy, accretion disc, and broad-line region (BLR) may also contribute significantly. Disentangling their contributions has been challenging for years due to dominance of jet. To quantify spectral variability, we use statistical technique dimensionality reduction non-negative matrix factorization on a spectroscopic data set 26 ?-ray blazars. This allows model large numbers spectra in terms reduced number components. We priori knowledge obtain components associated with meaningful physical processes. The sources are classified according spectrum as host-galaxy BL Lac objects (BL Lacs), Lacs, or flat radio quasars (FSRQs). Host-galaxy show less expected, bluer-when-brighter (BWB) trends, other Lacs. For FSRQs, more complicated colour-flux behaviours observed: redder-when-brighter low states saturating above certain level and, some cases, turning BWB. able reproduce variability observed during 10 yr using only two four components, depending type. simplest scenario corresponds blazars, whose reconstructed stellar population power law (PL) reproduced from PLs. Different can be acceleration/cooling processes taking place reconstruction FSRQs incorporates QSO-like component account BLR, plus very steep PL, disc.

Patterns of variability in gamma-ray blazars
Preliminary results of a systematic study on the simultaneous optical-to-X-rays variability in blazars are presented. Data from Swift observations of four bright γ−ray blazars (3C 279, ON +231, S5 0716+71, PKS 2155−304) have been analyzed, compared, and discussed. Specifically, 3C 279 shows a variable flattening in the low energy part of the X-ray spectrum that appears to be confined in a speci...
متن کاملVariability Models of Gamma-Ray Blazars
Much observational efforts have been devoted in recent years to study blazar variability across the electromagnetic spectrum (for a recent review see e.g., Ulrich, et al. 1997). In addition to spectral and polarization information, variability data can provide stringent constraints on the radiation mechanisms, the geometry of the emission regions, beaming factors, formation and dynamics of shoc...
متن کاملSpectral modelling of gamma-ray blazars
We present model calculations reproducing broadband spectra of γ-ray blazars by a relativistic leptonic jet, combining the EIC and the SSC model. To this end, the evolution of the particle distribution functions inside a relativistic pair jet and of the resulting photon spectra is investigated. Inverse-Compton scattering of both external (EIC) as well as synchrotron photons (SSC) is treated usi...
متن کاملSpectral Energy Distributions of Gamma-ray Blazars
Average Spectral Energy Distributions (SED) for different subgroups of blazars are derived from available homogeneous (but small) data sets, including the gamma–ray band. Comparing Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQ) with BL Lacs extracted from radio (RBL) or X–ray surveys (XBL) remarkable differences and similarities are apparent: i) in all cases the overall SED from radio to gamma–rays shows t...
متن کاملThe Spectral Shape of the Gamma-ray Background from Blazars
The spectral shape of the unresolved emission from different classes of gamma-ray emitters can be used to disentangle the contributions from these populations to the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGRB). We present a calculation of the unabsorbed spectral shape of the unresolved blazar contribution to the EGRB starting from the spectral index distribution (SID) of resolved EGRET blazars de...
